Productivity fosters social stability
Simpson Miller
LABOUR MINISTER Portia Simpson Miller recently urged workers at two factories in Spanish Town, St. Catherine to play their part in ensuring greater productivity in the nation.
"Productivity is the major element that will foster sustained economic growth and social stability," the Labour Minister told the workers.
"It will lead to improvements in the standard of living of all our citizens. Low productivity is a hindrance to how well we all live. We must, therefore, ensure that we play our part by giving of our best."
The two factories were toured by Mrs. Simpson Miller recently. She was hosted by WISYNCO and Caribbean Foods, producers of Jamaican products, including Foska Oats, Bigga Soft Drinks and a variety of plastic and foam products.
Together with a delegation from the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Sport she visited the factories and offices, meeting with management and workers. The team was joined by Mr. Vincent Morrison, president of the National Workers Union, who represents the workers at both plants.
The objectives of the visit were to encourage cordial industrial relations and promote tripartite co-operation of employers of labour, workers and their trade union representatives and Government within industries.
In addition, the trip was designed to ensure that occupational health and safety standards are being maintained, and the Minister and her team to meet with workers and their managers simultaneously, to encourage productivity.
The Minister's team included the Senior Director - Industrial Relations, Mr. Gresford Smith, and directors from the Occupation Health and Safety, Legal, Labour Outreach, Communications and Conciliation departments of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Sport.
